FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, DC – The executive officers of the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE) and the president of the Association of Administrative Law Judges-IFPTE Judicial Council 1 (AALJ) express their strong support for the nomination of former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley to lead the Social Security Administration (SSA). By calling on Gov. O’Malley to serve in this important position, President Biden has once again delivered on his commitment to working families and our retirees.

IFPTE President Matthew Biggs:

“As a native Marylander, I know well Gov. O’Malley’s record of advocating for workers, students, the poor, our retirees, and other people who too often get left behind. I also commend him and his family for their tradition of service and generations of thoughtful, effective leadership in all three branches of state government, including their support for working families and the unions that represent them.  Maryland is a better place to work, live, learn and breathe, thanks to their contributions. Gov. O’Malley is ideally qualified to lead SSA and IFPTE enthusiastically endorses his nomination.”

IFPTE Secretary-Treasurer Gay Henson:

“More than 66 million Americans rely on Social Security to meet their most basic needs. Those payments arrive on time every month because the employees at SSA work hard every day. As Mayor of Baltimore and Governor of Maryland, Martin O’Malley proved that modernizing processes and achieving efficiencies can go hand-in-hand with protecting the interests of public sector workers and respecting their contributions to the delivery of crucial governmental services. IFPTE looks forward to working with Gov. O’Malley to strengthen SSA’s commitment to its beneficiaries, its employees, and the workers and companies who fund this highly successful pillar of the New Deal.”

AALJ President Som Ramrup:

“The Association of Administrative Law Judges welcomes the nomination of Gov. O’Malley to lead the Social Security Administration. The administrative law judges represented by our union are dedicated professionals who are deeply invested in the success of SSA, but we need Senate-confirmed leadership to address longstanding challenges at the agency. We commend Acting Commissioner Kijakazi’s capable leadership and her efforts to rebuild the labor-management relationship between SSA and the AALJ and we look forward to building on that productive partnership with Gov. O’Malley leading SSA.”

Across the United States and Canada, IFPTE represents 90,000 highly skilled workers in the federal, public, and private sectors. IFPTE is an affiliate of the AFL-CIO and the CLC. More information can be found at www.IFPTE.org.
